CORD BLOOD CAN ALSO BE USED BY FAMILY MEMBERS
Stating that cord blood can also be used with less compatibility when performing stem cell transplantation in leukaemia treatment, Haematologist Prof. Tanyeli said, ‘While the expectation of compatibility in bone marrow is up to 9 out of 10, even 4 out of 6 compatibility in cord blood can be sufficient.’
Hematologist Oncologist Prof. Dr. Atila Tanyeli stated that cord blood, which can only be taken after birth and contains a high amount of stem cells, can be used for the baby itself, as well as for siblings with a very high probability of tissue group matching.

An Average of 3 Thousand Children Get Cancer Every Year
Prof. Dr. Atila Tanyeli, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Çukurova University (ÇÜ) Faculty of Medicine, said that an average of 3 thousand children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Turkey and that early diagnosis is of great importance in treatment.
Emphasising that it would be very useful for families to have their children undergo a health check-up at least once a year, Prof. Dr. Atila Tanyeli said, ‘Unfortunately, the number of children who get cancer in our country reaches 3 thousand per year. In early diagnosis, we save 60 out of 100 patients on average. In some types of leukaemia and some kidney tumours, this rate increases to 80-90 percent. In late diagnosis, the success rate of treatment remains at 30 per cent. For this reason, families should pay attention to the warnings, ‘he said.
